I have experienced the world of formal education from just about every perspective imaginable: as a student, teacher, parent, bus driver, custodian, coach, board member and professor. Each of these experiences has convinced me that, at heart, education is all about relationships. All theorizing about education and all teacher training must be firmly grounded in this truth.
My teaching assignment at King's coincides with my two main areas of interest; for the past eleven years I have taught courses in Educational Foundations and Curriculum Design. Throughout my twenty year career as a high school teacher, I was involved in many curriculum writing projects. Curriculum development has always been the venue through which I have grappled with the educational spirits of the age. It is here that I have seen the need to develop a faith based approach to teacher training.
As the Department Chair, I concern myself with maintaining our excellent reputation as a teacher preparation institution. We have a demanding program, but we also provide a strong community of support. I especially relish the challenge of providing a program that prepares teachers for both secular and faith based school systems.
My research agenda is currently focused on the efforts of Christian educators to develop an alternative Christian curriculum orientation. I am also kept busy preparing curriculum writing workshops for elementary school teachers in both Canada and in Russia.
On a personal note, I love to camp in the Rocky Mountains with my wife Glenda; I enjoy the food and books that we share with our book club; I am at peace when fly fishing an Alberta stream; I am blessed watching my children grow up.
